The 2016 Tony Awards are almost here and I couldn’t be more thrilled that my FAVORITE play, HAMILTON, is nominated for an astounding 16 awards!!!

I saw the play in February – as a fluke I entered the lottery and won! By intermission, I was geeking out in joy and excited anticipation for Act II, buying a t-shirt and already humming what I’d heard. By the time I got home, I’d downloaded and listened to the songs all the way home! I can’t stop listening to it and raving about it! It’s better than the hype. REALLY. An extra bonus was seeing my friend Jeannie Naughton, who works on the show and graciously had us backstage! WOW!

My faithful readers know I am all about the Oscars® and best picture noms but this is special – this is HAMILTON! I had to do something special! My favorite song is “My Shot” so I am honoring it and the show with a custom rhyme and delicious dessert – and make sure it would be something A.Ham may have actually enjoyed! Strawberry Tart! Yes!

adrianpicThanks to my friend, rapper Adrian Almodovar, my rhyme came to life and my loving parody was complete! Granted, I wrote the lyrics before I finalized the recipe so what he’s rapping isn’t exactly the final one! Creative license… Ha!

Here’s how:

IMG_9675INGREDIENTS:
• 1 cup + 2 tbsp flour
• 1 pinch salt
• 2/3 cup + 2 tbsp sugar
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1 tbsp white vinegar
• 2 lbs strawberries, stemmed – 3 cups chopped, the rest halved
• 1/2 tsp cinnamon

DIRECTIONS:
1) Combine 1 cup flour, salt, 2 tbsp sugar, and butter. Mix to create course crumbs. Add vinegar and form into dough.
2) Using a 9″ or 10” tart pan, press dough evenly across bottom and up sides.
3) In a large bowl, toss chopped strawberries, remaining sugar, and flour with cinnamon and distribute evenly onto the dough.
4) Bake in a 375° oven for 35-40 minutes or until filling is bubbling and crust is browned. Remove to cooling rack.
5) Arrange halved strawberries and let cool. Remove pan’s rim and serve!

I’m looking forward to seeing Hamilton sweep the awards! No matter how it goes down, this show is an incredible success and Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius. Not only immigrants but Native New Yorkers (like me) get the job done! Hail Hail Hamilton!

PS – if you’re interested, here’s are the words!

My Shot – My Tart
I have GOT straw-ber-ries-in-my TART

Hey yo it’s fresh like my country
It’s yummy when I’m hungry
I have GOT straw-ber-ries-in-my TART

I’m a take some flour eggs sugar spices
Add vanilla, Mix ‘em for a crust that wins prizes
Wrap in plastic, cool thirty minutes no surprises
Remove and roll into the  – pan,
it’s the tart plan, It tastes nicest.

Put the berries in a bowl, cut them fairly small,
Use the best of all, then sugar sweet, unbelievable
Pour into the crust but don’t spill them over
Bake for forty minutes I know it seems bolder
Now it’s time for takin’ from the oven
To finish don’t be rushin’, add more berries over gushin’
Then eat a piece – loving!

The plan is to make this berry taste insane
And damn, it looks delish, so let’s repeat the refrain

I have GOT straw-ber-ries-in-my TART
Hey yo it’s fresh like my country
It’s yummy when I’m hungry
I have GOT straw-ber-ries-in-my TART

I’ve GOT straw-ber-ries-in-my TART
I have GOT straw-ber-ries-in-my TART

We’re gonna EAT UP – EAT UP
